A report from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has estimated that, with proper care and handling, DVD optical media should last 30 years. However, blue laser technology appears ready to supersede red laser (no political significance intended!)
120mm blue laser optical uses a non-abrasive read/write process. It can be safely read tens of thousands of times without degrading the media surface.
